With EU copyright reform on the horizon, how much do you know about Text and Data Mining (TDM)?

On 27 September, the FutureTDM project is holding a high profile event to discuss text and data mining and what can be done to improve uptake in the EU.

The project

Why is TDM important? Because using machine technology to sift through big data can help us further our understanding of the arts, science and beyond. This provides an opportunity for economic and cultural growth.  Yet in the EU, we aren’t doing as much of this text and data mining as in other parts of the world, in part due to legal, economic, technical and organisational factors. That is why FutureTDM, an EU funded project, is working with the TDM community (including start-ups, publishers, developers, library organisations, funders and industry) to get an understanding of the content mining challenges these stakeholders face. Our project team along with externally invited experts will develop policy recommendations to help improve uptake of TDM in the EU.

The workshop

September 2016 marks the half-way point for this two year project and to inform people about our progress, we will be holding our first FutureTDM workshop in Brussels. We will hear about the information gathered so far from the project’s EU-wide road show of knowledge cafes. Our project reports will also be explained – giving an idea of the current TDM landscape in the EU – the legal, economic and research environment. In the second half of the workshop, invited experts will discuss the identified emerging factors which are significant barriers to TDM in the EU and what we can do to address them. The audience will be encouraged to provide their feedback on these issues with online options for input on the day.

Our workshop is a reflection of the two core themes of our project; stakeholder inclusion and expert analysis. We hope you can attend.

This video explains why we need input from the TDM community.

We are organising the workshop at the European Parliament under the sponsorship of the Digital Agenda Intergroup

Information about FutureTDM events can be found on our Hub website www.FutureTDM.eu

For those who can’t attend, we will have an online poll and live twitter feed where we’ll invite questions and comments on TDM, some will be read out at the event itself.
